Obama has Betrayed us

He promised us change but instead gave us more of the same.

He turned his back on his biggest supporters

  • He's done very little to nothing on racial justice in America.
    • "Obama has done little to address race during his presidency, beyond the actions of his Justice Department. With Holder’s exit, that track record suggests the president is now done with race." (source)
    • "For all of Holder’s focus on structural discrimination in the criminal and civil justice systems, the president has tended to blame black culture. Early in his presidency, he told a church audience “Too many fathers … have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men. … You and I know how true this is in the African American community.” Obama’s scolding has sometimes seemed misplaced, as when he told members of the Congressional Black Caucus to “quit whining, quit complaining” and  the graduates of Morehouse “No more excuses. Nobody cares how much discrimination you suffered.”"
  • "NAACP President, Benjamin Jealous: Black People Worse Off Under Obama"
  • "...Black women, Obama’s single largest voting demographic, have been the subject of no executive orders, no White House initiatives and no pieces of progressive legislation. Ninety-six percent of black women voters voted for Obama compared to 87 percent of black men. Seventy-six percent of Latinas voted for the president compared to 65 percent of Latino men.

Though black and other women of color who are a part of the LGBTQ community will benefit from this latest executive order, no initiative has explicitly addressed the structural issues of racism, classism, poor education, heavy policing and sexual and domestic violence that disproportionately affect black and Latina women." (source)
  • "President Obama said Sunday that his decision to postpone any executive action on immigration until after November’s midterm elections was not driven by politics. Almost nobody’s buying that, of course." (source)

Broken Promises

  • He ran in 2008 on protecting social security. Then Obama decided to cut it until he was convinced otherwise by Bernie Sanders.
  • "Fast-forward to today. Guantanamo remains open, warrantless wiretapping continues, and drone strikes have accelerated, leading to the deaths of innocent civilians and a burst in support for anti-American forces in Yemen, Pakistan and Somalia. Instead of breaking with the Bush era, Obama has codified and permanently institutionalized the “war on terror” framework that has characterized American foreign policy since the September 11, 2001 attacks. And they have done all of this largely in secret, refusing to open up about how drone strikes are decided on. So while torture has been thrown out of the American playbook, other black marks remain. Obama has done everything but restore “core constitutional values” to how the U.S. conducts itself
    extreme poverty has gotten worse
around the world." (Salon, January 2013)
  • The candidate made taking care of veterans a pledge and a priority, but hundreds of thousands of them are stuck in a long waiting line for disability decisions. (source)
  • As a Presidential candidate in 2008, Obama promised to fix the VA. Now 6 years later the agency is worse than ever.
  • 7 Inauguration Promises Obama Never Fulfilled:
    • Making Unpleasant Decisions And Standing Up To Narrow Interests: Though Congress passed the sweeping Dodd-Frank financial reform bill in 2010, two-thirds of the rules have yet to be finalized. That’s thanks in part to bank lobbying, which has weakened or slowed down the process of making the rules.
    • Lay A Foundation For Growth: Obama oversaw a net gain in jobs during his first term, but many of the jobs created during the past four years aren’t the kind that “lay a foundation for new growth.” Instead, about three-fifths of the jobs created during the recovery were low-wage, according to an October report from the National Employment Law Project. On election night 2012, Obama pledged to create new jobs for the middle class; we’ll see if he lives up to the promise.
    • Infrastructure BuildingThough President Obama’s stimulus plan is perhaps best known for its infrastructure spending, only $100 billion of the $787 billion went to overhauling infrastructure, according to Ezra Klein. In addition, Congress punted on overhauling the nation’s highway system by voting to keep funding at current levels for the next two years, the National Journal reports.
  • Bill Moyers criticized President Barack Obama on Friday for his decision to seemingly leave the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the hands of the anti-net neutrality forces he opposed as a candidate. (source)

Obama's Unprecedented Attack on American Freedoms

  • It is now well known that the Obama justice department has prosecuted more government leakers under the 1917 Espionage Act than all prior administrations combined – in fact, double the number of all such prior prosecutions. But as last week’s controversy over the DOJ’s pursuit of the phone records of AP reporters illustrated, this obsessive fixation in defense of secrecy also targets, and severely damages, journalists specifically and the newsgathering process in general.Source
  • Obama behaves like a centrist who leans tentatively left on certain social programs but boldly right on military force and civil liberties. His supporters, who have watched him duplicate and codify some of the Bush administration’s most damaging civil liberties violations, are now reduced to wishful thinking that an authentic Obama will soon step forward and return the country to the constitutional footing that was abandoned after 9/11. (Source: TheNation)
  • This is the second time that Obama has sought to put Brennan at the helm of the CIA, and his confirmation process is likely to revisit old controversies over U.S. counterterrorism measures undertaken by the administrations of Obama and George W. Bush. (source)
  • "Obama advisor who had decried ‘war on terror’ now defends drones"

Obamacare is a failure

  • Despite the fact that Affordable Care Act has been in place for four years by now, more than one million low-income Americans who are dependent on community health centers are still going uninsured, according to a new report conducted by researchers at George Washington University. (source)
  • In an effort to ease President Obama’s reelection bid, the White House delayed the imposition of a series of regulations affecting Obamacare and environmental protection ahead of the 2012 election, according to a new report in the Washington Post. (December 2013)
  • Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes on Wednesday twice refused to say whether she would have voted for President Barack Obama's signature health care law. (source)
  • "By tying doctor pay to patient satisfaction scores, Obamacare’s “pay for performance” system is going to disproportionately hurt minority doctors." (source)
  • President Obama and the Democratic Party dug themselves into a deep hole by claiming the Affordable Care Act would cut the nation’s health care costs when in fact it will raise them. It’s the gift that will keep on giving to opponents of the law.

The ACA cannot cut costs because its proponents subscribed to the wrong diagnosis of the U.S. health care crisis. They accepted the conventional wisdom that overuse of health care services is the most important reason why per capita health care costs are double those of the rest of the industrialized world, and that overuse is caused by two chronic failings among American doctors: They routinely order services patients do not need and fail to provide them with obviously beneficial preventive ones that would keep them healthy and minimize later need for medical interventions. (source: Truthdig)
  • "[T]he Left pretends that [the ACA] is a radical step forward to justice, when actually it is a very modest reform of the existing – exceedingly, unsustainably expensive – system, based largely on onetime GOP proposals, while the Right is in high dudgeon mode over this allegedly vast expansion of state power, when really it’s a huge gift to the insurance industry (a Republican stalwart). Moreover, the ACA manages to do the nearly impossible, namely increasing access to healthcare only very modestly, at considerable taxpayer expense, while doing essentially nothing about controlling spiraling costs, not least because that would upset trial lawyers (a Democratic constituency)." • The Debt/Deficit has skyrocketed under Obama
    • "The federal debt has more than doubled — rising 116 percent — and big annual deficits have continued." (january 2016)
    • "The Congressional Budget Office now projects this year's deficit will rise to $590 billion, or 3.2% of the economy. That's up from $438 billion, or 2.5% of GDP in 2015." (August 2016)
    • "Interest on the debt, meanwhile, is expected to double as a share of GDP in the next decade both because of a projected rise in interest rates and growth in the accumulation of federal debt held by the public.
    • "The CBO projects that debt will grow from 77% of GDP this year to nearly 86% by 2026.

Barring any changes to current law, the debt is expected top its World War II peak within 20 years, again due to the aging of the population, higher health care costs and higher interest costs."

The only beneficiaries of Obama's Presidency have been the wealthy

  • "Corporate profits are up 166 percent; real weekly wages are up 3.4 percent."
  • " The Dow Jones Industrial Average has also more than doubled, rising 106 percent during Obama’s tenure, and the NASDAQ Composite index has tripled, rising 222 percent."
  • Extreme poverty (below 50 of the poverty level) has averaged 6.5% (as of 2014) during the Obama administration. Which is higher than for any year during all previous White Houses in the last 40+ years. (source: Census Bureau)
    forbes 400 chart
  • "While by now everyone should know the answer, for those curious why the US unemployment rate just slid once more to a meager 5.9%, the lowest print since the summer of 2008, the answer is the same one we have shown every month since 2010: the collapse in the labor force participation rate, which in September slid from an already three decade low 62.8% to 62.7% - the lowest in over 36 years, matching the February 1978 lows. And while according to the Household Survey, 232,000 people found jobs, what is more disturbing is that the people not in the labor force, rose to a new record high, increasing by 315,000 to 92.6 million!" (source) [October 2014]
  • "The decline in the unemployment rate to 5.9% is welcome, though not as good as it looks because the labor force fell by 97,000. The labor participation rate thus fell again for the second month in a row to 62.7%, remaining at levels last seen in 1978, while the share of the population employed stayed at a very low 59%....Also disappointing is the decline in average hourly earnings by a penny to $24.53. Average earnings have risen only 2% in the last 12 months, which means that most workers have barely received a raise after inflation. No wonder millions of Americans say they believe the economy is still in recession, even though the downturn officially ended 64 months ago." (source) [October 2014]

He plays golf while the World Burns

  • "The president-golfs-while-the-world-burns view may be gaining some traction in the mainstream press. With the ongoing racial unrest in Ferguson, Missouri and the beheading of US journalist James Foley making headlines last week, the contrast with a president at play on Martha's Vineyard fairways was particularly stark." (source)

Obama - the war monger

  • "MSNBC host Rachel Maddow challenged President Barack Obama’s “rhetorical distinction” on Wednesday between his proposed action against the extremist group Islamic State (ISIS) and an actual war.
“I have to take issue with him in saying this is not going to be combat,” Maddow told colleagues Richard Engel and Lawrence O’Donnell. “As far as I’m concerned, once we’ve got pilots in the air dropping bombs over forces that have anti-aircraft artillery on the ground, those pilots are on combat missions already.” (source)
  • "President Obama was elected on a "peace" platform and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. To the deep disappointment of his former supporters, Obama has overseen the largest military budget since WWII; an eight-fold increase in drone strikes; special forces operations in at least 134 countries, twice as many as under Bush; and a massive increase in the special forces night raids or "manhunts" originally launched by Rumsfeld in Iraq in 2003, which increased from 20 in Afghanistan in May 2009 to 1,000 per month by April 2011, killing the wrong people most of the time according to senior officers." (source)
  • "Yet, it is no small irony that the anti-inequality movement that cleared the path for Obama’s presidency would find its supposed personification in a chief executive who has spoken less about poverty and race than any Democratic president in a generation. And that the Baptist preacher from Georgia who stood for nonviolence would never have condoned the militaristic actions of a president whose escalated use of drone warfare kills innocents around the world." (source: Fredrick Harris, professor of political science and the director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University)
  • "If, indeed, there were an imminent threat of attack on the United States, Obama would be legally entitled to launch a military operation. The United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of military force, allows an exception when a country acts in self-defense. Under the well-established Caroline doctrine, the "necessity for self-defense must be instant, overwhelming, leaving no choice of means, and no moment for deliberation." The only problem is, Obama admitted, "We have not yet detected specific plotting against our homeland." Citing only the vague possibility of future "deadly attacks," Obama nevertheless declared a perpetual war with no specific end time." (source)
  • "Jon Stewart tonight took on President Obama‘s speech, saying the president “went full ‘America, fuck yeah!’” and that he’s embraced the idea of a “weird, all-powerful Tarantino America.”

But that didn’t mean the speech didn’t have its problems. For a start, Obama invoking previous campaigns in Yemen and Somalia didn’t help. And the fact that the coalition “looks awful Christiany [and] has a little bit of a Crusade-y vibe.”" (source)

  • In White House councils, John Brennan has been privy to the most secret U.S. intelligence programs. Outwardly, he has been the administration’s most public defender of one of President Barack Obama’s most controversial practices — the expanded use of armed drone aircraft to kill terrorism suspects overseas.
  • Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Sunday that he was told not to “acknowledge” or “discuss” the secret drone program when becoming the government’s top spokesman.(source)

A Failed Presidency

  • Jimmy Carter: President Obama blew it on ISIL
  • "In his 2008 convention speech, Barack Obama declared that as president he would clean up the mess created by “the failed presidency of George W. Bush.” Now many Americans say he has done a worse job in office than the man he replaced. A new Quinnipiac poll finds that a plurality rated Barack Obama the worst president in the past 70
    obama failure
years — worse even than Richard Nixon, who resigned in scandal. That is quite an achievement." (source)
  • Washington Post: "A majority of Americans say Obama’s presidency is a ‘failure’" (source) [September 2014]
  • "In a personal plea to President Obama, the mother of jailed U.S. Marine Andrew Tahmooressi asked for increased urgency in her son’s case in Mexico, where she says “one more day is one day too many” behind bars." (source) [September 2014]
  • "JON MEACHAM: It's a little worse than normal.  Because even though he was there, my sense is he doesn't particularly like people and politicians who don't like people are kinda in the wrong business."' (source)
  • "The Intellectual Dishonesty of Obama..."
    • "Yes, the GOP is obstinate. We get it. But assigning the White House some blame is no false equivalence."
    • "But it's my belief that Obama has overstated his obstacles to success on taxes, immigration, climate change and other issues. The candidate of unbridled optimism in 2008 is now cynical, bowed and nearly beaten – a leader whose excuse for failure amounts to, I can't lead because Republicans won't let me. By the way, that is not a conservative talking point; it's rooted in dozens of conversation I've had in the past 17 months with Democrats."
    • "Sargent makes a reasonable point. However, Democrats had control of both chambers of Congress when Obama took office in 2009, and most voters weren't happy with the result. Furthermore, Sargent's prescription for a better state of politics is exactly what's wrong with the system. "Winning elections" is all the matters in Washington. Obama promised better."
    • "Rarer still is one side 100 percent right, which is why Obama is guilty of false purity. Obama's intellectual dishonesty has prevented him from learning on the job, which is what's required of great presidents – the kind who overcome obstacles that others whine about."
  • "But Mr. Obama and his team would benefit, as they begin the second term, by acknowledging that many of the biggest problems facing the administration flow directly from the man at the top. Mr. Obama is a lousy manager. As chief executive he gets a C — and then only if graded on a curve that takes into account his predecessor’s managerial weaknesses." (Source: Op-Ed, NY Times)
  • "The White House accidentally identified the CIA’s top official in Afghanistan on Sunday, sending his name to reporters traveling with President Barack Obama on a short Memorial Day weekend visit to the U.S.-run Bagram Air Base outside Kabul." (source)

The Imperial President

  • President Barack Obama lists assets worth between $1.95 million and $7.15 million, of which $1 million to $5 million were in Treasury notes, according to financial disclosure forms (source)

He's a Friend of Polluters and Enemy of the Environment

  • President Barack Obama is promoting advances in energy efficiency as part of his broader campaign to confront climate change. He is drawing attention to the effort at a Wal-Mart store, angering labor and pay equity advocates. (source)
  • So far, however, he’s been half-hearted at best when it comes to such measures. The White House, for instance, overruled the EPA on its proposed stronger ozone and smog regulations in 2011, and last year opened up the Arctic for oil drilling, while selling off vast swaths of Wyoming’s Powder River Basin at bargain-basement prices to coal companies. His State Department flubbed the global climate-change negotiations. (It’s hard to remember a higher profile diplomatic failure than the Copenhagen summit.) And now Washington rings with rumors that he’ll approve the Keystone pipeline, which would deliver 900,000 barrels a day of the dirtiest crude oil on Earth. Almost to the drop, that’s the amount his new auto mileage regulations would save. If he were serious, Obama would be doing more than just the obvious and easy. (source)

He is Pushing the Anti-American TPP trade deal

  • "On Tuesday, Politico broke the story that the White House will be "making an all-out push to win passage of the deal in the lame duck session of Congress, organizing 30 events over the congressional recess." The effort will be designed to put pressure not only on Democratic members of Congress, but also on swing Republican votes, by lobbying important business interests in their districts." (August 2016)
  • U.S. president Barack Obama’s top Asia adviser has said the president’s request for trade promotion authority shows the administration’s goal is to complete a major trade pact with Asia this year. “We are confident we can and we will get it done,” Evan Medeiros, senior director for Asia at the U.S. National Security Council, said recently when asked about the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
“The president made very clear last night that TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) and TPP is now a top presidential priority and now is the time to get it done,” he said, referring to Obama’s Jan. 20 state of the union address. (source)

  • "Republican leaders offered qualified praise to President Barack Obama today after he sent up a trio of trade bills that could win Congressional approval before the end of the month. Both Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) thanked the president for submitting the pending free-trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea while criticizing him for not moving sooner." (source)
  • "A new study challenges claims from the administration of President Barack Obama that Colombia is making important strides in bringing to justice killers of labor activists and so deserves U.S. congressional approval of a long-stalled free trade pact." (source)
